Smoke is responsible for the majority of fire fatalities. A product that holds back flame for 60 minutes is no good if smoke pours through the seal in the first 5. Smoke-rated access products are independently tested under BS EN 1634-3 to verify cold-smoke leakage stays below the regulatory threshold, with most of our smoke-tested products achieving the Sa classification.

What does smoke rated mean?

Smoke leakage is tested separately from fire resistance. A product carries a smoke classification (S, Sa or S200) based on how much air it lets pass at defined pressures and temperatures.

Sa — Ambient smoke
Tested at ambient temperature. Demonstrates the product seals against cold smoke movement — the kind that travels ahead of a fire through corridors and escape routes.
S200 — Hot smoke
Tested at 200°C ambient temperature in addition to the Sa test. Required where smoke at elevated temperatures is a credible risk.
Where it matters
Protected escape routes, shared corridors in flats, hospital wards, hotels, and any door or hatch on the protected route from a habitable space to the final exit.

BS EN 1634-3:2004
Smoke leakage test for door and shutter assemblies — the basis for an S classification. Tests air leakage at 25 Pa and 50 Pa.

Common questions

Answers to the questions specifiers and Building Control most often ask.

No — they're tested separately. A product can have a 60-minute fire rating with no smoke classification, or a smoke classification without high fire integrity. Most of our access panels, riser doors and R12 loft hatches are tested for both, but always check the specific product datasheet.
Sa is tested at ambient temperature only and demonstrates resistance to cold smoke. S200 adds a test at 200°C, simulating smoke that has heated as it travelled away from the seat of the fire. S200 is the more onerous classification.
Protected escape routes — stairs, lobbies, the corridors leading to final exits — and any door or access panel between a habitable space and that route. Approved Document B and BS 9991/BS 9999 are the authoritative sources.
Smoke seals are typically intumescent or brush-fin and are designed for the building's lifespan. Routine maintenance involves a visual inspection at each fire-door check — we supply maintenance guidance with every order.
