A riser door is a full height or oversized access door fitted into walls to allow maintenance access to vertical service risers in multi storey buildings. These risers carry essential building infrastructure, plumbing, electrical cabling, gas pipework, HVAC ducting, and fire suppression systems, between floors. Where risers pass through fire compartment walls, the door must maintain the same level of fire resistance, acoustic performance, and airtightness as the surrounding structure.

At Rapid Access, our riser doors are available in metal faced and plasterboard faced options, with fire ratings up to 4 hours / 240 minutes (BS476, valid to 2029) on R51 premium, acoustic performance up to 40dB Rw, and smoke sealed variants available. R13 budget riser doors are documented in PIM as tested to BS EN 1634-1: 2014+A1:2018; R57 acoustic doors to BS EN ISO 10140-2: 2010. Specific test certificates available on request.

Every riser door is manufactured from Zintec steel at our UK factory and available in single door, double door and multi door configurations from 300×300mm up to 2400×1000mm per leaf, with double doors available up to 2400×1800mm overall. Where the riser does not pass through a fire compartment wall and no fire rating is required, our non-fire-rated riser doors are a lower-cost option.

Advantages of Riser Doors

Engineered to protect critical building services while maintaining fire safety, acoustic performance, and a clean interior finish.

Fire Compartmentation

Maintains the fire integrity of riser shafts with tested ratings up to 4 hours / 240 minutes (BS476, valid to 2029), preventing fire and smoke spread between floors in multi storey buildings.

Acoustic Separation

Sound reduction up to 40dB Rw to minimise noise transmission through service risers. Helps meet Part E and BB93 requirements for residential and education projects.

Fast Installation

Our Fast Fit Spring Pin Pivot Hinge (electroplated steel) significantly reduces fitting time compared to traditional piano hinges, cutting labour costs and keeping your programme on track.

Secure Access

3 point locking system as standard, manufactured from bright zinc plated mild steel. Bespoke locking options for residential, communal and high security applications are available on request.

Fully Customisable

Single, double, or multi door configurations in metal or plasterboard faced. Any size from 300×300mm to 2400×1000mm per leaf with bespoke fire ratings, acoustic performance, locking and frame options.

Seamless Finishes

Metal faced doors in any RAL colour to match corridors. Plasterboard faced doors tape, joint, and decorate flush to the wall, virtually invisible when closed.

Riser Door Frequently
Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about specifying, ordering and installing riser doors.

A riser door is a full height or oversized access door designed to provide maintenance access to vertical service risers in multi storey buildings. Service risers carry essential infrastructure, plumbing, electrical cabling, gas pipework, HVAC ducting, and fire suppression systems, between floors. Riser doors are fitted into walls surrounding these shafts to allow safe, compliant access while maintaining the fire integrity, acoustic performance, and airtightness of the structure.
In most multi storey buildings, yes. Where service risers pass through fire compartment walls or floors, Building Regulations (Approved Document B) require that access doors maintain the same fire resistance as the surrounding structure. This means a riser door installed in a 90 minute fire rated wall must also achieve 90 minutes of fire resistance. R13 budget riser doors are documented in PIM as tested to BS EN 1634-1: 2014+A1:2018. R51 premium riser doors achieve up to 4 hours / 240 minutes per BS476:1987 (valid to 2029); specific test certificates for R51, R57 and R53 are available on request.
Access panels are typically smaller units for accessing services behind walls and ceilings, valves, junction boxes, inspection points. They’re flush fitted and designed to blend with the surface. Riser doors are full height doors used to access vertical service risers, typically floor to ceiling. They’re larger, heavier duty, and often require higher fire ratings and locking systems for security in communal areas.
This depends on the building type, fire strategy, and fire resistance of the surrounding wall. For most multi storey residential and commercial buildings, 60, 90 or 120 minute ratings are standard. Building Regulations Approved Document B provides guidance, but always check with your fire engineer or building control officer for project specific requirements.
Our riser doors are independently fire tested. R51 premium riser doors achieve up to 4 hours / 240 minutes per BS476:1987 (valid to 2029) with current ratings to BS EN 1634-1. R13 budget riser doors are documented in PIM as tested to BS EN 1634-1: 2014+A1:2018; R57 acoustic doors to BS EN ISO 10140-2: 2010 for acoustic performance. Specific test certificates from UKAS accredited test houses are available on request.
Yes. Our premium R51 riser doors achieve sound reduction up to 40dB Rw, tested to BS EN ISO 10140-2. Acoustic riser doors are important in residential buildings where Part E requires sound insulation between dwellings, and in schools where BB93 sets acoustic standards for learning environments. Acoustic performance is available alongside fire ratings, so you don’t have to compromise on either. Full perimeter acoustic seals are fitted as standard on all acoustic rated doors.
Per leaf sizes range from 300×300mm up to 2400×1000mm on R51 (premium) and 2400×900mm on R53 (plasterboard). Double and multi door configurations combine multiple leaves for wider openings. R57 ranges from 300×300mm up to 1900×650mm and R13 from 1201×300mm up to 2000×600mm. All doors are made to measure within these ranges. For non standard requirements, contact our technical team.
Riser doors are supplied with a 3 point locking system as standard, manufactured from bright zinc plated mild steel and paired with a Fast Fit Spring Pin Pivot Hinge in electroplated steel. Bespoke locking options for residential, communal and high security applications are available on request, contact our technical team to discuss your project requirements.
We offer picture frames and beaded frames. Picture frames (PF) provide a clean 25mm visible border, suited to new build installations. Beaded frames (BF) have an exposed edge, ideal for retrofit work where the frame covers unfinished wall edges. Plasterboard faced riser doors (R53) ship with a beaded frame that can be taped and jointed flush. Custom frame types are available on request.
Primarily aesthetics. R53 plasterboard riser doors ship with a beaded frame and a 12.5mm thick plasterboard face that can be taped, jointed, and decorated to match the surrounding wall exactly. When closed, the door is virtually invisible, maintaining the interior design of the space. This makes plasterboard faced riser doors particularly popular in high end residential buildings, hotels, and design led commercial spaces where visible service doors would compromise the aesthetic.
Yes. Metal faced riser doors are supplied as standard in powder coated RAL 9010 (white) at 30% gloss. We can finish doors in any RAL colour to match corridors, communal areas, or brand colours. Alternatively, doors can be supplied dust primed for on site decoration. Plasterboard faced doors are designed to be decorated on site to match the surrounding wall finish.
Standard lead time for riser doors is 3 to 5 working days from order confirmation. Bespoke orders are made to order. Lead times may vary depending on specification, configuration, and production schedules. For urgent requirements, contact our sales team to discuss expedited options. All riser doors are manufactured at our UK factory, giving us direct control over production timelines and quality.
Yes. Fire rated riser doors achieve up to 4 hours / 240 minutes integrity (R51 BS476:1987, valid to 2029), supporting compliance with Approved Document B (Fire Safety). R13 is documented in PIM as tested to BS EN 1634-1: 2014+A1:2018; R57 acoustic doors to BS EN ISO 10140-2: 2010 (33dB). Acoustic options support Approved Document E (Resistance to the Passage of Sound). All testing is carried out independently at UKAS accredited test houses, with full certification available for building control submission on request.
Absolutely. Send us your door schedule or riser requirements and our team will review the specification, confirm suitability, and provide a detailed quote. We work with architects, contractors, and developers across the UK to ensure the right product is specified for every opening. Our sales team aim to respond within the hour.
