As a UK manufacturer of fire-rated access panels, riser doors, loft hatches, and meter overboxes, we recognise that our manufacturing activities have an environmental impact, and we take active steps to minimise that impact.
We believe that environmental sustainability and business success are not mutually exclusive. By integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations, we aim to reduce waste, conserve resources, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable built environment.
ISO 14001 Tested — Rapid Access holds ISO 14001:2015 certification for Environmental Management. This internationally recognised standard provides the framework for our environmental management system, ensuring we systematically identify, manage, monitor, and control our environmental issues in a holistic manner.
2. Environmental Objectives
We have established clear environmental objectives that guide our decision-making and operations:
- Reduce waste to landfill — continually improve our waste management processes to minimise the volume of waste sent to landfill, with a target of year-on-year reduction
- Increase recycling rates — maximise the proportion of manufacturing waste that is recycled or repurposed, particularly metals, packaging, and insulation offcuts
- Lower carbon emissions — reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency improvements, sustainable transport, and responsible sourcing
- Conserve natural resources — optimise material usage in our manufacturing processes to reduce raw material consumption
- Prevent pollution — implement controls to prevent pollution of air, water, and land from our manufacturing activities
- Comply with legislation — meet or exceed all applicable environmental legislation, regulations, and codes of practice
3. Manufacturing Practices
Materials
We carefully select materials that balance performance, durability, and environmental impact:
- Recyclable steel — our core products are manufactured from steel, one of the most recycled materials in the world, with high recycled content in our supply chain
- Responsible sourcing — we prioritise suppliers who demonstrate environmental responsibility and source materials from tested or traceable origins
- Low-impact materials — where possible, we select insulation materials, sealants, and finishes with lower environmental impact and reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions
- Packaging reduction — we have reduced packaging materials and transitioned to recyclable or biodegradable packaging wherever practicable
Production
Our manufacturing processes are designed to minimise environmental impact:
- Lean manufacturing — continuous improvement methodologies reduce material waste and improve process efficiency
- CNC precision — computer-controlled cutting and forming equipment minimises material offcuts and waste
- Batch optimisation — intelligent production scheduling maximises material yield from standard sheet sizes
- Quality control — robust inspection processes reduce reject rates and the associated waste of materials and energy
Waste Management
We operate a comprehensive waste management programme:
- Metal recycling — all steel and metal offcuts are segregated and sent to tested metal recycling facilities
- Packaging recycling — cardboard, paper, and plastic packaging waste is separated for recycling
- Hazardous waste — any hazardous materials are handled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations through licensed waste carriers
- Waste tracking — all waste streams are monitored and measured to identify opportunities for reduction
4. Energy & Carbon
We are committed to reducing our energy consumption and carbon footprint across our operations:
- Energy-efficient equipment — investing in modern, energy-efficient manufacturing equipment and lighting (LED throughout our facility)
- Building efficiency — improving the thermal performance of our manufacturing facility to reduce heating energy demand
- Transport optimisation — consolidating deliveries and optimising delivery routes to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions
- Carbon monitoring — tracking our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to establish baselines and measure progress
- Renewable energy — actively exploring opportunities for on-site renewable energy generation and green energy procurement
5. Product Lifecycle
We consider the environmental impact of our products throughout their entire lifecycle:
- Durability — our products are designed and manufactured to provide long service life, reducing the need for premature replacement
- Energy performance — our insulated loft hatches and Part L compliant products actively contribute to building energy efficiency, helping to reduce heating costs and carbon emissions throughout the life of the building
- Airtightness — our airtight-rated products, tested to BS EN 1026:2016, help buildings achieve better airtightness performance, reducing heat loss and energy waste
- End-of-life recyclability — the steel construction of our products means they can be fully recycled at end of life, contributing to a circular economy
- Fire safety — our fire-rated products protect buildings and their occupants, supporting sustainable long-term building use
6. Supply Chain Sustainability
We work with our supply chain partners to promote environmental responsibility:
- Supplier selection — environmental performance is a factor in our supplier evaluation and selection process
- Local sourcing — where possible, we source materials and services from UK-based suppliers to reduce transport emissions and support the domestic economy
- Supplier engagement — we communicate our environmental expectations to suppliers and encourage continuous improvement in their own sustainability practices
- Packaging returns — where feasible, we operate packaging return schemes with suppliers to reduce waste

Rapid Access is committed to full compliance with all applicable environmental legislation and standards, including:

- Environment Act 2021 — the UK's environmental governance framework including targets for waste reduction and resource efficiency
- REACH (UK) — regulations on the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemicals used in our products
- Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) — compliance with regulations where applicable to our operations
- ISO 14001:2015 — our tested environmental management system provides the framework for identifying and controlling our environmental impact
