Fire-rated access products preserve the integrity of fire compartments — walls and ceilings designed to slow the spread of fire and smoke between zones. When a service penetration breaks that compartment, a tested and certified access panel, riser door, loft hatch or meter overbox restores the rating. Without one, the compartment fails and so does Building Control sign-off.

What does fire rated mean?

A fire rating is a tested time period — measured in minutes — during which a product resists the spread of fire under controlled furnace conditions. UK and European testing classifies fire performance against three properties:

E — Integrity
The time the product remains intact and prevents flame and hot gases passing through (e.g. E60 = 60 minutes of integrity).
I — Insulation
The time the unexposed face of the product stays cool enough not to ignite materials on the other side (e.g. EI60 = 60 minutes of integrity + insulation).
S — Smoke leakage
The product limits the passage of cold smoke, tested separately to BS EN 1634-3.

Approved Document B (Fire safety)
Sets fire resistance periods required for compartment walls, floors and protected shafts in England and Wales. Service penetrations through these elements must be sealed or fitted with tested products that maintain the rating.
BS 9999 / BS 9991
Code of practice for fire safety in non-domestic and residential buildings. Defines compartmentation strategy and the rated products needed at riser doors, ceiling penetrations and meter cupboards.
Regulation 38 (Fire safety information)
Requires the duty-holder to be given fire safety information at completion, including evidence of fire-rated products installed. Independent test certificates supplied with every order satisfy this.

Answers to the questions specifiers and Building Control most often ask.

E is integrity only — the product prevents flames and hot gases for the rated time. EI adds insulation — the unexposed face stays cool enough not to ignite combustible materials. EI₂ is the more onerous insulation test under the EN classification, measuring temperature rise at 100mm from any edge rather than 25mm.
The required rating comes from the fire strategy for the building, which is set by the architect and approved by Building Control under Approved Document B. Most service penetrations through 60-minute compartment walls need an EI60 or E60 product; through 120-minute compartments, EI120 or E120. Our Help Me Specify tool walks you through the choice.
Insulation matters when there are combustible materials close to the unexposed face — typically in residential corridors, escape routes, and any compartment line where stored goods or finishes could ignite. Plant rooms and risers often only need integrity. Always check with the fire engineer or Building Control.
Yes. All fire test reports are issued by UKAS-accredited testing laboratories. Reports are supplied free with every order and are accepted as compliance evidence by Building Control and Approved Inspectors.
Yes — many of our fire-rated access panels, riser doors, loft hatches and meter overboxes are also independently tested to BS EN 1634-3 for smoke leakage, giving the full ES or EIS classification needed in escape routes and shared corridors.
